Thunderbirds Narrowly Defeated by Monroe in Boys Hockey

In a highly competitive Badger Conference game held at Pierce Park on February 4, the Baraboo High School Thunderbirds, despite a valiant effort, were narrowly defeated by Monroe with a final score of 5-4. Monroe lead throughout, but had to withstand an intense fightback by the Thunderbirds, reflecting the team's growing prowess as noted by Head Coach Tony Bluske. The game began with Monroe taking an early lead, ending the first period ahead at 2-1. Despite goals from Brody Goode and Tysen Folgate for Monroe, Baraboo's Bobby Meeker fired one in, keeping the game closely contested. The second period saw Monroe pulling further ahead, concluding it at 4-2 with Patrick Alt striking twice for Monroe and Brody Bjorklund scoring for Baraboo. In the third period, Monroe's Benjamin Erdley scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal with 8:55 remaining. However, Baraboo responded immediately. With goals from Wyatt Arnold and one from Bjorklund in a span of :38, Monroe's lead was cut to a single goal with 7:42 left in the game. Senior goalie Josiah Fanning's 27 saves were not enough to clinch a victory against Monroe's 30 saves by Brock Brandli. Coach Tony Bluske expressed pride in his team's performance, remarking, "The boys battled hard. Over the last couple of weeks we are playing some of the best hockey I have seen in years." His comments underscore a team in the throes of significant improvement and high spirits despite the narrow loss. Looking ahead, the Thunderbirds will face RWD in their next outing on Friday at Reedsburg. The team currently holds a record of 3-11, but the spirit and fight shown in recent performances suggest promising prospects for the upcoming games.
