Thunderbirds Triumph in Double Dual Season Opener

The Baraboo High School Thunderbirds, representing the girls' tennis team, showcased their prowess in a double dual event held on August 19, 2025, in La Crosse, WI. Facing off against La Crosse Central High School and La Crosse Logan High School, the Thunderbirds emerged victorious in both matches with impressive scores of 7-0 against Central and 6-1 against Logan. Key performances highlighted the team's depth and resilience. Michelle Barahona, in her varsity singles debut, made a notable comeback from 2-5 down in the second set to secure a win against Central. Grace Atwater similarly turned around a challenging match after dropping the first set 3-6, to win the second set 6-4 and decisively taking the match tiebreak 10-7 against Logan. Leah Kierzek dominated at #1 singles, cruising to victory with scores of 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1 in her matches. Gigi Heiner also contributed significantly with victories in both of her matchups. The doubles teams were equally impressive. Mallory Olson and Willa Scanlan at #1 doubles dropped only three games throughout the day, demonstrating their dominance and coordination. Lauren Jauch and Layla Puttkamer also stood out, winning their matches in straight sets against Logan and a convincing 10-1 tiebreaker against Central. With these wins, the Thunderbirds have improved their season record to 2-0. They look to carry their momentum into their next event scheduled for August 21, 2025, against Reedsburg at Reedsburg High School.
