Watertown holds off Baraboo girls soccer team 3-2 despite second-half push

Watertown built an early cushion and held off a strong second-half response from Baraboo for a 3-2 win Wednesday in a conference match at Baraboo High School.
The decisive stretch came in the first half, when Watertown scored the match's opening goal and then added two more before the break. Baraboo answered after the first strike with a rebound goal from Kylee Hollenbeck-Smith, keeping the Thunderbirds within reach on a crisp 44-degree evening at Flambeau Field, but Watertown still carried a 3-1 lead into halftime.
Baraboo controlled much of the second half and cut the deficit to one goal when Maya Ferrera-Hunter scored off an assist from Shelby Rangel. The Thunderbirds continued to press for an equalizer, turning the match into a one-possession game late, but Watertown was able to preserve the lead.
Baraboo's defensive effort helped keep that rally possible. Goalkeeper Rachel Wegner delivered several key saves, and the Thunderbirds' back line limited further damage after halftime as the team settled in and made Watertown work for every chance.
Though the result went to Watertown, Baraboo showed resilience after falling behind early and matched the visitors with a determined second-half performance. Hollenbeck-Smith and Ferrera-Hunter accounted for the Thunderbirds' two goals, with Rangel assisting on the second as Baraboo nearly erased the halftime deficit.
