Waunakee scored early and often Tuesday night, defeating Baraboo 14-0 in a conference match at Baraboo High School. The visitors built the result in the opening half with six goals, then added eight more after halftime, but Baraboo continued to battle throughout the match behind a busy defensive effort and a standout night from goalkeeper Rachel Wegner.
Wegner was tested from the opening minutes and finished with more than 20 saves, turning aside repeated chances while helping the Thunderbirds stay organized under constant pressure. Even as Waunakee controlled possession and pushed numbers forward, Wenger's work in goal gave Baraboo a steady presence and prevented the scoreline from growing even larger.
Baraboo's defensive work showed up in several areas of the field. Gianna Bates set the tone in the midfield with an aggressive approach that disrupted play and helped the Thunderbirds contest loose balls. On the left side, Annie Carol played a key role by reading plays early and stepping into passing lanes, repeatedly arriving in time to stop advances before they could fully develop.
The Thunderbirds also drew energy from their sideline during a difficult match. Constant positive praise from the Baraboo bench helped sustain the team's effort as Waunakee kept pressing in both halves. Though Baraboo did not find a breakthrough offensively, the team continued to compete and showed resilience from start to finish against a strong opponent.
The loss moves Baraboo past another challenging conference test, with the performance offering clear examples of individual resolve in a demanding matchup. Wenger's night in goal, Bates' work in the midfield and Carol's alert play on the outside gave the Thunderbirds bright spots to build from as the schedule continues.
