Sophomore Will Stelling closed his season with a steady and then surging performance at the state golf championship, finishing tied for 24th in a 104-player field with a two-day score of 149, 5 over par, at Verona on Monday and Tuesday.

Advancing through regionals and sectionals to reach the state tournament is an accomplishment on its own, and Will backed it up with a respectable showing against one of the strongest fields in the state. Playing in the 36-hole event for the first time, he handled the moment well after arriving with plenty of excitement for the opportunity to compete at the highest level of the high school season.

On the opening day, Will played a controlled round while adjusting to the speed of the greens. He worked his way through the course with a steady approach and posted a 6-over-par 78, placing himself around the middle of the individual standings after the first round. Afterward, he went back to work, spending additional time on the driving range and putting green and remaining at the course until late as he prepared for the final 18 holes.

That preparation showed on Day 2. Knowing he needed a strong round to climb the leaderboard, Will stuck to his plan from the start. He hit a high number of fairways, reached 8 of his first 9 holes in regulation and carded three birdies on the front nine for an impressive 3-under start. He continued to strike the ball well on the back nine and, despite missing a few short putts, finished the day at 1 under par.

The turnaround from the first round to the second gave Will a combined score of 149 and a tie for 24th, a strong result in a tournament filled with the state’s top golfers. His finish provided a fitting end to his sophomore season and offered another sign of growth for Baraboo’s program.

In clear conditions and warm temperatures, Will Thunderbirds Boy's showed the patience and shot-making needed to compete on a big stage. A state appearance alone marked a significant achievement, and his closing under-par round gave him a memorable finish to carry into next season.
