Baraboo closed its season Tuesday with a fifth-place finish at the WIAA sectional tournament at Reedsburg Country Club, posting a team score of 314 against a deep field, while sophomore Will Stelling earned an individual trip to the state tournament with a 2-over-par 74.

On an ideal day for golf, with temperatures in the 70s, sunny skies and little wind, the Thunderbirds arrived at a familiar course knowing the margin for error would be small. Reedsburg Country Club demanded strong ball-striking and steady scoring throughout the round, and Baraboo aimed to get a number on the board early while measuring itself against one of the strongest sectional fields.

Will Stelling delivered the round of the day for Baraboo. He struck the ball well off the tee, hit plenty of greens in regulation and repeatedly gave himself chances for birdie while avoiding costly mistakes. His round kept him inside the top 10 for much of the day, and his 74 eventually held up as part of a tie for third overall, good enough to claim one of the three individual state-qualifying spots.

Baraboo also received a solid 79 from Jack Brinker, who played well tee to green but ran into trouble on a few holes. Cooper Jauch recovered from a slow start and played his final 11 holes at even par on the way to an 80. Finnley Schindler continued his consistent season with an 81, and Jon Moon shot an 83 in his final round as a Thunderbird.

Middleton and Waunakee shared the team title at 298 and advanced to state, while Madison West placed third at 306 and Onalaska took fourth at 312. Baraboo finished two shots behind Onalaska and continued a season in which the Thunderbirds regularly produced team scores in the low 300s, a level that helped them reach sectionals as a team in a competitive regional and sectional path.

Although Baraboo fell short of a team state berth, the day still produced a significant finish. Will Stelling's top-three result extended the Thunderbirds' season by another week, and his steady 74 on a demanding course gave Baraboo a state qualifier to carry forward from an otherwise narrow miss in Reedsburg.
