Harrington’s 77 Leads Titans to Fifth at SWC Championship

LAGRANGE, Ohio - Thomas Harrington shot a 77 and Luke Higgins added an 80 to lead Berea-Midpark to a fifth-place finish Thursday at the Southwestern Conference Championship. The Titans posted a team score of 328 in their bid to repeat as conference champions.
Harrington recorded the third-lowest individual score in the 42-player field, giving Berea-Midpark its best round of the tournament. Higgins also finished inside the top 10, placing ninth. Their combined 157 provided the foundation for the Titans’ team total on an overcast morning with a temperature of 71 degrees at the scheduled 8:30 a.m. start.
Berea-Midpark entered the championship looking to defend its SWC title, but a slow start left the Titans chasing the leaders. They were unable to make up enough ground as the round progressed, and a sputtering finish kept them from moving higher in the standings despite the strong individual results from Harrington and Higgins.
Avon Lake won the conference championship with a 312, finishing three strokes ahead of runner-up Avon at 315. Olmsted Falls took third with a 322, and Amherst Steele placed fourth at 325. Berea-Midpark finished three strokes behind Amherst Steele, six behind Olmsted Falls and 16 behind champion Avon Lake.
The final standings reflected how narrow the margins became behind the top two teams. Although the Titans did not secure a second consecutive championship, Harrington’s 77 and Higgins’ top-10 round gave Berea-Midpark two of the tournament’s better individual performances in a field of 42 golfers.
