Bishop Foley Catholic High School closed its cross country season Wednesday, Nov. 4, in Macomb, with Gavin Samona and Finnegan McGlinchey leading the Ventures by finishing under 20 minutes. The boys competed in two separate races.
Samona recorded the Ventures’ fastest time in the first race, finishing in 19:52.92 with an average mile of 6:25. McGlinchey followed in 19:58.12, averaging 6:26 per mile. Their finishes were separated by just 5.20 seconds, giving Bishop Foley a closely matched pair at the front of its lineup. The runners competed in light drizzle and a temperature of 63 degrees.
Both runners completed their second seasons with the Ventures after earning medals earlier in the fall. At the 5th NCA Small School Invite on Oct. 13 at MSU Tollgate Farms, McGlinchey placed 15th out of 83 runners and Samona finished 17th. Both earned medals awarded to the top 30 finishers.
The pair also finished one place apart at the CHSL Cardinal Division Championship on Oct. 23 at Willow Metropark. McGlinchey took 17th out of 46 runners, while Samona placed 18th. Those results earned both runners all-league medals in the 16th-through-20th-place group. McGlinchey also earned an all-academic medal.
In the second race of the finale, Otis Pogodzinski completed his first season with a time of 23:29.76, averaging 7:36 per mile. Jeremy Slotnick finished in 26:18.17 with an average mile of 8:29, completing his third season running cross country for the Ventures.
