Mystics rally past Valley City State 9-8 in 10 innings

Bismarck State erased an early four-run deficit and outlasted Valley City State 9-8 in 10 innings Wednesday evening, winning on Karsen Haney’s bases-loaded walk in the top of the 10th in Valley City, North Dakota.
The Mystics trailed 5-1 after the opening two innings as Valley City State scored twice in the first and added three more in the second. Devin Minney’s single helped set up the Vikings’ first-inning push, which included a bases-loaded walk by Grady Shipman and an RBI fielder’s choice from Merik Junker. Bismarck State got one run back in the second when Lucas Vasey drew a bases-loaded walk, but Valley City State controlled the game early.
Bismarck State began to close the gap in the sixth. Eric Reiling delivered the key swing of the inning, lining a two-run single to trim the deficit to 5-3. The Mystics then surged in the seventh. Pacey Phillips tied the game with a two-run homer, and Brayden Bunnell followed later in the frame with an RBI triple that put Bismarck State in front 6-5.
The lead did not last long in a game filled with traffic on the bases. Valley City State answered with one run in the seventh and two more in the eighth. Junker drove in a run with a triple, and Minney later drew a bases-loaded walk to give the Vikings an 8-7 edge. Bismarck State responded again in the ninth when Greyson Dockter worked a bases-loaded walk to force home the tying run.
Haney’s patient plate appearance in the 10th produced the decisive run as the Mystics drew their 18th walk of the game. River Walters earned the win in relief, allowing two hits and one walk over two innings while striking out one and holding Valley City State scoreless in the bottom of the 10th. Bismarck State finished with nine hits, while Valley City State had 12.
Phillips led the Mystics offensively, going 3-for-? with three RBIs, two runs scored and the seventh-inning home run that shifted the game’s momentum. Reiling added two RBIs, Bunnell tripled, drove in a run and drew three walks, and the Mystics kept grinding through a windy, partly sunny evening that stretched into extra innings before Haney’s walk finally settled it.
