First Responders and Community Unite for 9/11 Tribute at Hillcrest-Shelley Game
Before Hillcrest and Shelley high schools kicked off their football game Friday, Sept. 11, 2026, first responders and community members came together in Ammon for a moving tribute. Deputies from the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office joined Idaho State Police troopers, local fire personnel and retired first responders at midfield, where they honored those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with a moment of silence.
The tribute set a powerful tone for the Unity Seats experience, placing remembrance, gratitude and common purpose at the center of the evening. Standing together under the stadium lights, active and retired first responders represented different agencies and areas of service while sharing the field as one public safety community.
The US United Unity Seats program uses sporting events to bring law enforcement leaders and community members together, including people who may hold opposing viewpoints. By sharing the same seats, the same game and the same cheers, participants can meet as neighbors rather than adversaries. The Hillcrest-Shelley matchup provided a welcoming setting for that mission, with high school football serving as common ground.
The recognition from those in attendance made the evening especially memorable for the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office and its public safety partners. The support shown by the crowd reflected the community’s appreciation for first responders, while the moment of silence ensured that the lives lost on 9/11 remained the focus of the pregame ceremony.
The sheriff’s office is grateful to the community, Hillcrest High School and Shelley High School for supporting the event. The gathering showed how sports can create space for respect across differences, strengthen relationships and bring people together around shared values. For the first responders assembled at midfield, the evening was both humbling and uplifting, offering a visible reminder that remembrance and unity remain strongest when a community stands together.
