DuSable Hosts Illinois Lutheran in High-Stakes 1A State Playoff Opener

Robert Story | DuSable | Feb 20, 2026

DuSable’s boys basketball team will step onto its home floor Monday night with a chance to advance in the IHSA Class 1A state playoffs, hosting Illinois Lutheran Feb. 23rd at 6:30 p.m. at 4934 S. Wabash Ave. The matchup marks the Panthers’ first year competing in the state playoffs and comes with heightened expectations, as DuSable enters as the home favorite with momentum and seeding on its side.

The Panthers come in at 11-6 and sit at No. 2 in their conference, a position that reflects a strong regular season under boys basketball head coach Nickolas Norals. DuSable has established itself as one of the area’s more dangerous 1A teams, blending guard play and defensive pressure into a style that has translated into consistent success. Playing at home in front of a familiar crowd adds another layer of advantage as the Panthers look to extend their season.

DuSable will lean heavily on its top duo, led by standouts Tyshawn Burns and Jesse Suggs. Burns has emerged as a primary scoring option and playmaker, capable of setting the tone early with his ability to attack off the dribble and finish in traffic. Suggs provides a critical complement, contributing as a scorer, rebounder and defender, and giving the Panthers balance on both ends of the floor. How Illinois Lutheran handles that one-two punch could shape the flow of the game.

Beyond individual performances, composure will be a central storyline for DuSable in its first state-playoff appearance. Managing nerves, protecting the ball and controlling the tempo will be key as the Panthers try to avoid giving Illinois Lutheran easy opportunities in transition. DuSable’s defense and focus in the second half, particularly in late-game situations, are likely to determine whether the team can turn its home-court edge into a trip to the next round.

With a top conference standing, strong leadership from the sideline and proven production from Burns and Suggs, DuSable enters Monday's contest positioned as the favorite to move on. A win would not only secure a place in the next round of the Class 1A state playoffs but also mark a significant milestone for a program making its debut on the state stage.
