Guardian Game Grayling and Kalkaska Together Through Unity Seats

The Guardian Game will bring the Grayling Vikings and Kalkaska Varsity football teams together Friday, Sept. 11, 2026, at 109 N. Birch St. in Kalkaska. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EDT, with the winner claiming the National Guard Minute Man trophy and the honor of displaying it at its school for the next year.

This year’s rivalry game will carry an even greater purpose through the US United Unity Seats program. The focus will remain simple and positive: no politics, no arguments and no negativity, just unity between Kalkaska and Grayling.

The Unity Seats experience was developed by Sheriff Wagner and Undersheriff Foerster of the Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Swope of the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office. Their collaboration reflects both offices’ commitment to building trust across county lines and strengthening connections among the people they serve. Football provides the setting, but listening, respect and common ground are at the heart of the evening.

The game also falls on the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The evening will honor those who lost their lives that day, along with those who have dedicated their lives to protecting the country at home and abroad. First responders and military veterans are invited to participate and be recognized for their service to their communities and the nation.

Before kickoff, Grayling Jr. Viking Cheer and Football and Kalkaska Pop Warner Football will join their varsity football teams for a moment of silence and the national anthem. From that shared tribute to the final whistle, the Guardian Game will showcase spirited competition while reminding both communities that respect, gratitude and love of country are stronger when experienced together.
