Mount Marty Pulls Away From Dakota State With Second-Half Surge

YANKTON, S.D. - Mount Marty (S.D.) scored four times after halftime, including two goals in an 82-second span, to pull away from Dakota State for a 5-1 nonconference women's soccer victory Wednesday at Crane-Youngworth Field. The Trojans fell to 0-2, while the Lancers opened their season at 1-0.
Dakota State goalkeeper Ivey Winckler kept the match scoreless for most of the opening half, making four saves during the first 35 minutes. Her stops included attempts from Angelina Hopwood, Rhyli Grim, Baylee Beck and Addison Altwies. Mount Marty broke through at 38:19 when Alexia Valdez converted an assist from Baylee Beck. The Lancers took that 1-0 lead into halftime after producing all nine shots in the first half, while the Trojans earned one corner kick.
The Lancers' second-half pressure changed the match. Julianne Donnelly scored from an assist by Kendra McKinney at 47:41, and Dakota State answered with its first shot on goal in the 56th minute when Katie Brown forced a save from Miranda Hood. Mount Marty then struck twice in quick succession. Grim scored at 60:50 off Liz Stordahl's assist, and Stordahl finished Donnelly's pass at 62:12 to make it 4-0. Mary Stordahl added The Lancers goal in the 81st minute following an assist from Avery Hoskins.
The Trojans continued attacking late. Onika Kline's header in the 87th minute was saved by Hood, but Dakota State broke through at 87:46 when Aislyn Holden scored her first goal of the season from an assist by Ella Pletcher. The final statistical totals credited Aislyn Holden with the Trojans' goal and Ella Pletcher with the assist. Aislyn Holden, Katie Brown and Onika Kline also recorded shots as Dakota State placed all three of its attempts on goal.
Ivey Winckler was credited with eight saves, and the Dakota State defense added a team defensive save. Mount Marty finished with advantages of 20-3 in total shots, 14-3 in shots on goal and 5-1 in corner kicks. The Trojans committed four fouls and were called offside once, while the Lancers had two fouls and seven offside calls. Dakota State remains on the road Sunday for a 5 p.m. match against NCAA Division II Sioux Falls (S.D.) at Bob Young Field.
