Drury Men Finish 36th at Hoosier Classic; Cherry Sets Program Scoring Record

INDIANAPOLIS – The Drury men’s bowling team capped its season with a strong showing at the Hoosier Classic, finishing 36th out of 78 men’s teams in one of the largest Tier I events of the year and posting a 7,464 pinfall total for the weekend.
Competing at Western Bowl in Indianapolis, the Panthers opened the two-day event Saturday with five traditional team games that positioned them well in a deep national field. Drury closed the first day in 26th place heading into Sunday’s Baker competition, putting the team squarely in contention for a top-third finish at the premier regular-season event on the men’s collegiate schedule.
Sunday’s format featured 15 Baker games on the demanding Red Square oil pattern, which significantly tightened scoring across the field. As the pattern proved difficult to navigate, Drury’s scoring pace slowed and the Panthers slipped 10 spots on the leaderboard, ultimately finishing 36th. Even with the slide in Baker play, the performance still placed Drury in the top half of a 78-team field and was described as an excellent way to close the year.
The highlight of the weekend – and one of the top moments of the season – came from Trayton Cherry, who delivered a record-setting individual performance. Bowling five traditional games on Saturday, Cherry posted a 1,153 pinfall, averaging 230.6 per game. That total not only secured 10th place individually in a field of more than 500 competitors, but also stands as the highest five-game tournament total ever recorded by a Drury bowler.
Cherry’s effort helped anchor the Panthers’ team block on Saturday and kept Drury firmly in the mix against many of the nation’s top men’s programs. His consistent scoring across the five games provided stability in a high-pressure environment, where every frame carried implications for both individual and team standings.
While the Red Square pattern on Sunday limited the team’s ability to make a significant climb in the standings, Drury navigated the Baker portion with enough composure to secure a mid-pack finish in one of the toughest fields of the season. The combination of a solid team total, a day-one surge into the top 30, and Cherry’s historic individual performance gave the Panthers meaningful momentum and a clear benchmark as they look ahead to future championship opportunities.
