Skyhawks Complete Overtime Comeback With 36-35 Win Over Piqua
FAIRBORN, Ohio - Fairborn High School turned a late rally into a thrilling 36-35 overtime victory over Piqua at home Friday, October 2, sealing the comeback with a successful two-point conversion. Coach Cox chose to play for the win after the Skyhawks scored in overtime, and his team delivered the decisive conversion.
The finish followed a rough first half for Fairborn, which had to rally to keep its hopes alive. Senior quarterback Daylen Switzer highlighted the night by breaking the school record for completions in a game. His record-setting performance gave the Skyhawks an individual milestone alongside a hard-earned team victory.
Fairborn's comeback reached its critical moment with only a couple of seconds remaining in regulation. Isaiah Smith blocked a field-goal attempt by Piqua which kept the game tied and sent the teams to overtime, giving the Skyhawks another chance to finish the rally. After battling back from their difficult opening half, they still needed to answer Piqua once more.
Piqua took the first possession of overtime and scored quickly. Fairborn responded with a quick touchdown on its own possession, bringing the Skyhawks within one point and setting up a choice between an extra-point attempt to tie and a two-point try for the victory.
Cox called a timeout after the touchdown and decided to go for two. The successful conversion completed the comeback, pairing Switzer's place in the school record book with a one-point overtime win. The Skyhawks will look to keep the momentum rolling into their next contest on Friday, October 9, against Xenia.
