Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis secured the doubles point but could not hold off a strong Lewis-Clark State singles lineup, dropping a 6-1 decision on Thursday afternoon at Sutter Tennis Courts in Marion, Indiana.
The Wildcats opened the match with the energy and execution the home crowd has come to expect, winning two of the three doubles courts to claim the early 1-0 team lead. Indiana Wesleyan answered Lewis-Clark State’s top tandem by taking control at the remaining positions, using aggressive returns and decisive net play to secure the doubles portion of the match, 2-1.
Lewis-Clark State’s No. 1 doubles team of Naiara Montero and Lulu Monnayoo earned the visitors’ lone doubles victory, topping the Wildcats’ top pair of Sofia Munoz and Puga by a 6-1 margin. Despite that result at the top spot, Indiana Wesleyan responded with poise, capturing the remaining two doubles courts to ensure the Wildcats carried the team momentum into singles with a 1-0 advantage.
Singles play shifted the overall outcome as Lewis-Clark State claimed all six courts. Munnayoo opened the visitors’ push with a straight-sets victory over Munoz at the top singles position, 6-2, 7-5, leveling the team score and turning the pressure back to the lower lines. From that point, the Warriors steadily added to their total, relying on depth and consistency across the lineup.
Indiana Wesleyan battled deep into several matches, extending play and forcing deciding sets in the middle of the order. At No. 3 singles, Montero edged Wildcats player Katie Parr in a three-set contest, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, and at No. 5 singles, Carisa Liebenberg outlasted her Indiana Wesleyan opponent Oliveira, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. While those scorelines went in favor of Lewis-Clark State, they reflected the Wildcats’ willingness to compete point-for-point in extended rallies and pressure moments.
The remaining singles courts finished in straight sets for the visitors. Gwyn Heim posted a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Puga at the No. 4 position, while Ana Govea closed out the match at No. 6 with a 6-3, 6-3 result against Dick. With those wins, Lewis-Clark State completed the singles sweep and secured the 6-1 team victory despite Indiana Wesleyan’s early doubles success.
Indiana Wesleyan leaves the match with a notable highlight in its doubles performance, taking two of three courts and demonstrating strong chemistry and court coverage across the pairings. The Wildcats will look to build on that doubles foundation as they move deeper into the spring schedule, aiming to translate their early-match strengths into full-match results in upcoming contests.
