Unity Seats Brings Lawrence County Communities Together on September 11

Friday night at Glenn “Pop” Johnston Stadium showed what can happen when schools, community organizations and first responders unite around a shared purpose.

Shenango High School, the Shenango Touchdown Club, the Mohawk Football Boosters, the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, Shenango Township Police Department and other local partners honored the 25th anniversary of September 11. The national US United Unity Seats initiative reinforced the evening’s message of remembrance, unity and connection.

Nearly 30 community members involved in Unity Seats were escorted onto the field and gathered at midfield for a moment of silence. Local first responders were also recognized over the stadium public address system, giving the community an opportunity to acknowledge those who continue to answer the call to serve.

Some of the night’s most meaningful moments happened away from the microphone. Participants walked the sidelines, spoke with families, met students and residents, and connected with people from both school communities. The shared atmosphere of Friday night football created opportunities for respectful conversation and personal connection across differences. Those interactions showed how sports can bring people together around common experiences while reminding everyone of the values they share.

One of the most personal moments came when retired Shenango High School English teacher and Korean War veteran Edwin Deal was brought onto the field and recognized by the Shenango community. Generations of former students remember Deal not only for what he taught, but also for the passion he brought to the classroom and the lasting impression he made. Honoring him on September 11 connected the evening’s themes of service, sacrifice and remembrance with the responsibility of one generation to pass those lessons to the next.

The evening reflected the value of remembrance, service and strong community partnerships. For younger generations, it also offered a reminder that September 11 is more than history. The stories of sacrifice, courage and the unity that followed must continue to be shared. The takeaway from Unity Seats was simple and powerful: remember the past, honor those who serve, and keep building a community that chooses to stand together.
