The Joe S Pear opened its beach volleyball season Saturday with a straight-set loss to Emma M, falling 21-18, 21-13, 21-15 at 23800 Detroit Rd in Westlake. In a match played under thunderstorm conditions with temperatures in the upper 70s and 17 mph wind, the decisive stretch came after a competitive opening set, when Emma M pulled away in the second and maintained control through the third.

The first set provided the strongest showing for the Joe S Pear. The team stayed within striking distance before dropping that opener by three points, 21-18. Emma M created more separation in the second set, winning 21-13, and then closed the match with a 21-15 decision in the third. While the overall result was not the start the Joe S Pear wanted, the opening set showed the kind of competitiveness the team can build on as the season moves forward.

One of the clearest positives from the opener was Lilly Kijewski, who was noted as showing real promise in the first match of the season. Her play stood out as determined and suggested she is ready for a larger role as the schedule develops. That kind of early-season energy gave the Joe S Pear something encouraging to take from a difficult result.

The match also exposed areas the Joe S Pear will look to sharpen. Peter Fitzpatrick was identified as not playing his best, though there is optimism he can improve in the next outing. Maeve Blum endured a rough match in the early going of the season, and Joe Webb was cited as needing to become a bigger factor in future contests. With a long season ahead, those players will have opportunities to respond quickly.

Roster availability could also shape what comes next. The Joe S Pear is looking ahead to the return of Grace Delaney and Jacob Rocky, two players mentioned as key pieces for the team as it tries to rebound from the opening loss. Saturday's result was a tough first step, but the combination of Kijewski's encouraging debut and the expected boost from returning contributors gives the Joe S Pear a clearer path into its next match.
