Nordonia High School’s boys and girls basketball programs traded baskets for generosity this holiday season, turning their first-ever Basketball Toy Drive into a clear win for the community.

Held at Nordonia High School, the event brought together players, families, and supporters in a unified effort to help children in need. By the end of the drive, the teams had collected more than 75 brand-new toys, all earmarked for Haven of Rest, a nonprofit organization serving individuals and families in the Greater Akron area.

While there was no scoreboard tracking points or fouls, the numbers still told an impressive story. Each donated toy represented a child or teen who would receive a special gift, turning what might have been an ordinary day into something memorable. The combined efforts of the boys and girls teams, along with the broader Nordonia community, showed how a single event can make a meaningful difference beyond the walls of the gym.

Haven of Rest staff distributed the toys to children and teenagers throughout the Greater Akron region, extending the impact of Nordonia’s initiative well past campus. For many recipients, these gifts will be a bright spot during a challenging season, underscoring the power of local schools and athletics to uplift their surrounding communities.

Organizers described the toy drive as a tremendous success and expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed. Parents, students, and community members responded enthusiastically to the call for donations, filling collection bins with items that reflected both thoughtfulness and generosity. The strong turnout reinforced the idea that when the Knights rally together, they do so with purpose and heart.

Beyond the numbers, the event highlighted how student-athletes can lead by example off the court. By dedicating time and energy to service, Nordonia’s basketball programs demonstrated that teamwork, commitment, and compassion are just as important as defense, shooting, and hustle. It was a different kind of victory, but one that will resonate long after the final buzzer of the season.

As Nordonia looks ahead to future games and events, the success of this first Basketball Toy Drive sets the stage for more community-focused initiatives. With more than 75 toys headed to children across Greater Akron, the Knights can take pride in knowing they’ve made a tangible, positive impact—proving that at Nordonia, winning extends far beyond the court.
