Otero College Rattlers Face Tough Weekend Matchups Against NMJC and NMMI
The Rattlers basketball team faced a tough challenge in squaring off with 2 storied programs in New Mexico Junior College and New Mexico Military Institute in Hobbs this past weekend in Hobbs, NM. The first matchup against NMJC, a team receiving votes in the top 25 JUCO poll, was a slow starting contest for Otero. New Mexico showed their talent with an impressive shooting performance throughout the 1st half, hitting 7 threes at 39%, which gave the Thunderbirds the halftime lead. The Rattlers did not quit however and battled back in the 2nd half. Led by SirDevin Roberts who had 19 pts in 16 minutes of action, and Kaylan Graham with 12 pts on 5-7 shooting from the field, Otero went back and forth with the Thunderbirds and played even in the 2nd half period, with a total final score of 102-80. The second contest of the weekend with NMMI followed a similar story, with NMMI jumping out to a 14 point first half lead but the Rattlers fighting back in the 2nd half. Otero couldn't find their shooting rhythm early on, but even with the shooting woes, Otero climbed back in the game and made it a 4 point contest with just under 2 minutes. A late scoring run by NMMI finally putting the game out of reach closing the game 74-64 in favor of Colts. Otero was led by Bertran Walthour Jr with 15 pts and 6 rebounds, and Nedum Chiadika with 14 pts and 7 rebounds. Otero returns to the court Friday the 21st with a matchup at Frank Phillips College in Borger, TX.
