Dordt pulls away from Peru State with three-run third in 6-2 result

Dordt broke open a tie game with a three-run third inning and handed Peru State a 6-2 loss in a seven-inning nonconference softball game Saturday at the ASB Dome in Sioux Center, Iowa.
The Bobcats struck first in the top of the first. Kylee Dieckmann doubled to left-center, then came home on Jami Mans' RBI single for a 1-0 lead. Dordt answered in the bottom half when C. Kreuz hit a solo home run to center, and the Defenders took control two innings later. A. Hensley delivered a sacrifice fly in the third, then L. Steenstra followed with a two-run homer to push Dordt in front 4-1.
Peru State trimmed the deficit in the fourth. Mans reached on an error and later scored on a sacrifice fly by K. Spreer, cutting the margin to 4-2. The Bobcats could not get closer against Dordt starter R. Yager, who worked all seven innings and struck out 12 while allowing five hits and one earned run.
Dordt added insurance in the fifth and sixth. Hensley singled home a run in the fifth after R. Yager had reached earlier on an error, and T. Schneider tripled in the sixth before scoring on T. Price's sacrifice fly for the final 6-2 margin.
Mans led Peru State at the plate, finishing 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Dieckmann's first-inning double accounted for the Bobcats' only extra-base hit. Peru State finished with five hits, one walk and five runners left on base.
In the circle, M. Hughes covered five innings for Peru State before S. Isaacs worked the sixth. The Bobcats were charged with three errors, and two of Dordt's late runs were extended by those miscues. Dordt finished with nine hits, led by Kreuz, Steenstra and Hensley, and closed out the win after Yager completed her 115-pitch outing.
