Balanced attack, dominant defense carry Prestonsburg past Powell County

Powell County, Ky. — Prestonsburg High School’s Blackcats women’s basketball team used stifling defense and a balanced offensive effort to roll past Powell County 59-21 on Saturday, controlling the matchup from the opening tip through the final buzzer.

The decisive stretch came midway through the third quarter. With 4:30 remaining in the frame, guard Jade Fitzpatrick buried back-to-back 3-pointers to ignite a 12-0 run that blew the game wide open and erased any remaining doubt. That surge capped a dominant second half in which the Blackcats continued to pressure the ball, limit clean looks and turn defense into transition opportunities.

Fitzpatrick led Prestonsburg with 19 points, pacing an offense that consistently found quality shots in the half court and in transition. The Blackcats’ guards attacked the perimeter and the lane, collapsing Powell County’s defense and freeing shooters around the arc. Fitzpatrick’s pair of threes in the third quarter served as the exclamation point on a night where she set the tone from the outside.

Forward Allison Howard added 13 points, giving Prestonsburg a reliable interior and midrange option to complement the backcourt scoring. Howard’s work around the basket and in the high post helped the Blackcats maintain offensive rhythm, especially when possessions slowed. With multiple players contributing, Prestonsburg was able to space the floor, share the ball and avoid scoring droughts that might have allowed Powell County to climb back into the game.

Defensively, the Blackcats controlled the tempo, holding Powell County to just 21 points for the game. Pressure on the ball and active help in the passing lanes disrupted Powell County’s sets and forced difficult, contested attempts. Prestonsburg consistently limited second-chance opportunities by cleaning the glass and securing rebounds, which fueled fast-break chances and early offense on the other end.

By the fourth quarter, Prestonsburg’s depth and energy had fully taken over, allowing the Blackcats to manage the clock and close out the win without allowing any significant run. The combination of perimeter shooting, inside scoring and disciplined defense offered a complete performance that reflected the team’s preparation and execution.

The 59-21 victory at Powell County underscores the Blackcats’ ability to dictate pace with defense while spreading the scoring load offensively.
