Norwood Victory Caps Unity Seats Tribute to First Responders

Norwood delivered a 52-34 victory Friday night, capping an evening that brought neighbors, first responders and law enforcement together to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. Before the football game in Norwood, the community paused to remember those lost on Sept. 11, 2001, and honor the first responders who serve and protect local communities every day.

The ceremony began with the Nucla VFW Color Guard presenting the colors as the national anthem played. A large American flag displayed from a Telluride Fire ladder truck created another memorable image, while Norwood Fire brought multiple vehicles and the ambulance that serves every Mavericks home game. Representatives from the San Miguel County Sheriffs office and Montrose County Sheriff's Office also joined the remembrance.

San Miguel County Sheriff Dan Covault spearheaded the Unity Seats experience in partnership with US United and with support from Norwood High School. The initiative uses the shared experience of a sporting event to bring community members with differing viewpoints together, not as adversaries, but as neighbors sharing the same stands, cheers and moments.

Sheriff Covault participated in the Unity Seats gathering as community members watched the Mavericks’ high-scoring win together. The remembrance ceremony, enthusiastic crowd and action on the field provided common ground throughout the evening. Rather than allowing differences to define the experience, participants could focus on respect, community service and their shared support for the people gathered around them.

The Norwood County Office extends its gratitude to the Norwood Fire, Montrose County Office, Nucla Fire, Telluride Fire, Nucla VFW and everyone who attended or helped make the event possible. The combination of solemn remembrance, recognition for first responders and a 52-34 Mavericks victory showed how sports can create space for connection across differences. Together, the community remembered. Together, it stood in support of those who serve. Together, it left the stadium stronger.
