SEASIDE, Ore. - Personal-best performances by freshman Garrett Weichal, sophomore Lexie Dickau and junior Ella Crater gave Seaside High School’s cross country season a late-season lift Saturday, Oct. 17. The Runners have one meet remaining, the Cowapa District Championships.

Garrett Weichal posted a personal-best 18:17.2 over 5,000 meters, putting a freshman behind Seaside’s leading boys mark. Senior Kyle Weichal remains a runner to watch after recording a personal-best 17:20.4 that same day. Those performances gave the boys two season-best marks from different ends of the high school experience heading toward the district meet.

Dickau led Seaside’s girls at 5,000 meters with a personal-best 23:21.6 on Oct. 17. Crater also reached a personal milestone that day, finishing in 26:33.1. The shared date made Oct. 17 a notable checkpoint for both sides of the program, with personal bests extending beyond a single runner or class.

Earlier in the fall, Dickau recorded a personal-best 23:50.4 over 4,300 meters on Sept. 26, adding another distance to the season’s achievements. Senior Grace Walker, another runner to watch, covered that distance in 30:16.2. The different race lengths provide separate benchmarks rather than a direct comparison of times.

The season’s challenges went beyond the stopwatch. The Grant Robison Invitational was scheduled to feature 15 teams, including three ranked opponents, on a two-loop, 5,000-meter course with six hay-bale jumps. The Fishermen 5K supplied another October target, while The Bigfoot Classic appeared on the regional calendar without confirmed Seaside participation. Across those preparations, the Runners emphasized hard work, determination and collaboration.

With younger runners contributing personal bests, Seaside approaches its remaining meet with concrete individual benchmarks. The district race is still ahead, leaving the season’s competitive finish unwritten. The Runners compete next at the Cowapa District Championships on Thursday, Oct. 29.
