Seaside Faces New League Opponent Valley Catholic in Road Test
Seaside High School (3-4) visits Valley Catholic (2-4-1) on Thursday, Oct. 1, at 5:15 p.m. in a Class 4A Cowapa League girls soccer matchup that pairs unfamiliar opponents seeking to end losing streaks. The No. 25 Seagulls face the No. 12 Valiants early in league play, with Valley Catholic newly joining the league and the teams yet to meet this season.
Seaside enters after consecutive shutout losses, an 8-0 defeat at Scappoose on Sept. 23 and a 1-0 home loss to Tillamook/Neah-Kah-Nie on Sept. 29. Restoring its attack while building on the lower-scoring defensive performance against Tillamook/Neah-Kah-Nie will be central to the road test. The Seagulls have scored nine goals and allowed 19 through seven matches, with victories over Ontario, 3-1; Baker, 1-0; and St. Helens, 2-1.
Senior Lilly, who wears No. 13, is a player to watch for Seaside. Her sustained commitment to the team and program has been a notable part of the season, and she provides an experienced presence as the Seagulls navigate an unfamiliar league opponent. Head coach Derek Stephenson's team has finished every match with a decisive result, making its ability to turn a close contest into another narrow victory a storyline after the wins over Baker and St. Helens.
Valley Catholic junior Luci Rakers, No. 17, is another player to watch. The Valiants have lost three straight, falling 7-1 at Oregon Episcopal before consecutive 2-0 defeats against Astoria and Scappoose. They have scored nine goals and conceded 21 overall. Unlike Seaside, Valley Catholic has secured a draw, finishing 2-2 against Gladstone, and its effort to avoid another defeat adds urgency to the matchup. Its victories came against Molalla, 3-1, and St. Helens, 3-0.
With both teams scoreless in their past two matches, creating chances without leaving defensive openings is a key tactical concern. Their shared win over St. Helens offers one point of comparison, but the unfamiliar matchup leaves the outcome difficult to predict. Thursday's meeting will establish an early league benchmark before the teams face each other again Oct. 22 at Seaside.
