St. Angela Merici Builds Sixth Grade Basketball Identity Around Toughness and Teamwork
St. Angela Merici’s sixth grade A basketball team enters the 2026-27 season looking to build an identity around toughness, discipline and relentless effort. The Bruins have a 10-player roster. With individual roles still taking shape, the preseason emphasis will be on learning to play together rather than relying on established roles or a defined rotation.
Peter Fitzpatrick, head coach, and Jack McCarthy, assistant coach, lead a new coaching staff focused on accountability and player development. Our approach calls for a competitive environment in which every player has responsibilities and every possession matters. Preseason work will give us a chance to evaluate strengths while players develop trust and learn to communicate on the court.
The roster includes Eli Barker, Zachary Barr, Neil Black, Matthew Gilbride Tommy Joyce, along with Peter Marini, Jack McDonough, Jack McLaughlin, Joey Murphy Collin Ormiston. With roles not yet defined, the Bruins enter the preseason with opportunities for players to emerge and establish how they can contribute to the group.
Defense will be a central priority for the Bruins, shaping their approach on every possession. They aim to become a physical, fundamentally sound team that challenges shots, protects the paint and makes opponents work for every basket. That standard depends on sustained effort, clear communication and disciplined execution—from matching up in transition to helping teammates and recovering to shooters. Aggressive rebounding will be just as important: the Bruins want to finish defensive possessions by pursuing the ball, limiting second-chance opportunities and creating chances to run the floor. Above all, they will take pride in getting stops and supporting one another on that end of the court. The expectation is to compete with focus and intensity from the opening tip through the final buzzer.
Offensively, St. Angela will focus on ball movement, spacing and unselfish decision-making to create scoring opportunities. Limiting turnovers and making the most of every possession will be key as the team builds chemistry.
Success will be measured by more than wins and losses. The coaching staff wants players to develop strong habits, compete with confidence and take pride in representing their school. From the first practice to the final game, the goal is to improve every day.
