Eagles Beyond Lakewood: Bullock Leads St. Edward Alumni Across College Football
The pipeline from Lakewood to college football continued to show its reach this weekend as former St. Edward standouts made an impact at every level of the sport. Casey Bullock accounted for 392 yards of total offense and three touchdowns in an overtime victory, Tyrese Buchanan helped Otterbein end a seven-game losing skid, and brothers Loghan Thomas and Brayden Thomas met on opposite sidelines in South Bend. From offensive breakthroughs to defensive stops and field-changing special teams plays, the Eagles carried the St. Edward standard onto fields across the country.
Buchanan contributed 45 yards from scrimmage as Otterbein defeated Wilmington 35-14 for its first win in the series since 2018. Buchanan rushed seven times for 37 yards and caught an 8-yard touchdown pass, displaying the versatility to contribute as both a runner and receiver. Bullock delivered the weekend’s biggest statistical performance in Davidson’s 27-24 overtime victory over VMI. The quarterback completed 20 of 32 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns, then added 104 rushing yards and a score on 25 carries. Bullock accounted for all three Davidson touchdowns and produced through the air and on the ground when the Wildcats needed it most, recalling the poise and playmaking ability Bullock displayed at St. Edward.
A memorable family matchup unfolded at Notre Dame, where Loghan Thomas and Brayden Thomas competed against each other as the Fighting Irish hosted Michigan State. Loghan Thomas recorded a solo tackle, one sack and one tackle for loss in Notre Dame’s 27-10 victory, helping the Irish defense limit the Spartans and secure an important early-season win. Brayden Thomas represented Michigan State but did not record an individual statistic. The scoreboard favored Notre Dame, but two brothers and two former Eagles sharing the field in the Notre Dame-Michigan State matchup reflected the development, tradition and brotherhood that continue after graduation.
Other St. Edward alumni contributed on offense throughout the weekend. Luke Hess caught four passes for 29 yards and added a 3-yard rush for Ohio Dominican against Ashland. Although the Panthers lost 24-3, Hess accounted for 32 yards and remained a dependable option in the passing game. Kent State’s Brandon White carried five times for 21 yards against Ohio State, while Akron wide receiver Kyan Mason caught five passes for 32 yards against Minnesota.
Former Eagles also made their presence felt on defense. UT Martin defensive back Joel Castleberry recorded eight tackles, including seven solo stops, against Memphis for the top tackling performance of the week among St. Edward alumni. Aydin Buchanan made four tackles, including two solo stops, as Concordia-St. Paul defeated Bemidji State 34-31. Kent State’s Thomas Aden recorded a solo tackle against Ohio State, Holy Cross defensive back Cam Boone added a solo stop against Yale, and Princeton’s Bradley Eaton contributed an assisted tackle against Bryant. Findlay’s Jon Slaper and Gannon’s Jaden Woods each posted an assisted tackle and half a tackle for loss, with Slaper contributing to Findlay’s 64-0 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan. Kenyon’s Michael Kerr finished with a solo tackle and a pass breakup against John Carroll, while Iowa’s Xavier Styles broke up a pass in the Hawkeyes’ 55-0 win over Northern Iowa.
Specialists completed the weekend’s alumni roundup. Dayton punter Ben Lavelle averaged 56.3 yards on three punts in a 17-14 victory over Eastern Kentucky, totaling 169 yards with a long of 61 and placing two punts inside the 20-yard line. In a game decided by three points, Lavelle repeatedly forced Eastern Kentucky to operate position. Denison long snapper Caden Yondo handled the snaps on five successful extra points and a field goal as the Big Red remained perfect on every kicking opportunity in a 38-0 victory over Wooster. Whether filling the stat sheet, contributing in the trenches or handling specialist responsibilities, the former Eagles again showed that graduation does not end the brotherhood.
