Eagles Carry Momentum Into Full Athletics Schedule for September 14-20

.Eagles Meet the Moment as Another Demanding Week Awaits

Football remains unbeaten, soccer responds with a home victory, golf showcases its depth and cross country races to a top-five finish.

A successful athletic program is not measured by a single final score. Its character is revealed across the miles between starting lines and finish chutes, in the patience required to find one more pass and in the courage to make the next play when a game hangs in the balance.

Last week, St. Edward’s varsity programs experienced competition in all its forms. There were victories to celebrate, lessons to absorb and performances that offered a glimpse of what may still lie ahead.

As a new week begins, the Eagles carry with them something more valuable than momentum: proof that when the moment becomes difficult, they are prepared to meet it.

There are football games decided by fireworks, and there are games won in the shadows—at the bottom of a pile, along the line of scrimmage and during the tense possessions when every yard must be earned.

Friday night’s meeting with Archbishop Hoban belonged to the latter category.

In another physical chapter between two of Ohio’s premier programs, St. Edward delivered the decisive plays and protected its perfect record with a 17–14 victory.

The Eagles generated 286 yards of offense and possessed the football for more than 28 minutes. Quarterback Langston Lucas accounted for both St. Edward touchdowns, throwing for 93 yards and a score while rushing for 121 yards and another touchdown.

Ronnie Neal Jr. caught two passes for 46 yards, including a touchdown reception. Dallas Nixon converted both extra-point attempts and added a field goal, providing the difference in a game separated by only three points.

The victory improved St. Edward to 4–0 overall, according to the Eagles’ updated MaxPreps football page.

Another storied opponent now awaits.

St. Edward returns to Baldwin Wallace University’s George Finnie Stadium on Friday for a 7 p.m. matchup with Massillon Washington. The Tigers bring their tradition, their following and another significant early-season test.

The Eagles bring an unblemished record—and the confidence that comes from surviving a four-quarter fight.

The best response to a difficult result is often the simplest one: return to work.

St. Edward soccer did exactly that last week.

After suffering a 5–1 road loss to Western Reserve Academy on Thursday, the Eagles returned home Saturday and regrouped for an important 3–2 victory over Olmsted Falls.

Landon Hannigan ’28 scored twice, continuing his productive season in the attacking third, while Ethan Glatt ’27 supplied the Eagles’ other goal. The performance gave St. Edward its third victory of the campaign and demonstrated the resilience necessary to recover from adversity in less than 48 hours.

The Eagles are now 3–4–1 overall, according to the updated MaxPreps soccer page.

St. Edward will have two opportunities to build upon Saturday’s victory this week. The Eagles host Andrews Osborne Academy at 6:15 p.m. Monday before welcoming Perrysburg to Br. James Everett, C.S.C. Stadium for a 3 p.m. match Saturday.

With both contests taking place at home, the week presents an opportunity for the Eagles to turn a strong response into sustained momentum.

Few programs displayed St. Edward’s competitive depth more clearly last week than golf.

At the St. Edward Gold Invitational at Westwood Country Club, the Eagles placed fifth in a strong field with a team score of 338. Nicholas Yonadi led St. Edward with an 82, with Carson Torek and Cannon Driscoll close behind.

The following day at Manakiki Golf Course, the Eagles filled the top of the leaderboard at the St. Edward JV and Varsity Green Showcase.

St. Edward JV1 captured the team championship with a score of 165, while the varsity Green team finished second with a 167.

Daniel Jacobucci earned medalist honors after firing a 39. Oliver Slattery finished one stroke behind with a 40, tying for second place. Gabe Waters and Bennett Moan each carded a 41, while Rory O’Donnell and Dominic Benni followed with rounds of 42.

In all, six St. Edward golfers placed among the top 10—a striking display of the program’s depth from top to bottom.

The Eagles returned to action Saturday at the Amusement Park Classic at Plum Brook Country Club and finished seventh with a team score of 320. Sam Variglotti led the way with an impressive 75, while Moan contributed a 77. Driscoll shot 83, and Yonadi and Torek each finished with rounds of 85.

The coming week provides another packed slate. The Gold team competes in three invitationals, the Green team travels for a dual match and the junior varsity squad faces two opponents before visiting University School on Sunday.

For a cross-country runner, improvement can be found in the smallest places—a stronger final hill, a more disciplined opening mile or a few hard-earned seconds removed from the clock.

At Saturday’s Wooster Invitational, those seconds told an encouraging story for St. Edward.

The Eagles placed fifth in a talented field that included Mentor, Olentangy Berlin, Massillon Jackson, Thomas Worthington, St. Ignatius, Avon and GlenOak.

Timothy Collins paced St. Edward with a time of 16:43.6. Owen Klocker followed in 16:48.0, Phoenix Russo finished in 16:53.8, Thomas Mullen crossed in 16:54.9 and Sean McGee completed the course in 16:59.6.

Five Eagles broke the 17-minute mark as personal records appeared throughout the lineup.

Sebastian Haikal finished in 17:27.5, Brandan McLaughlin crossed in 17:50.9 and Rylan Elbin recorded a time of 18:10.4.

The Eagles now prepare to leave Ohio for one of the season’s most anticipated events, Saturday’s Trinity/Valkyrie Invitational at Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky. The varsity race is scheduled for 9 a.m.

The new week begins on the golf course and soccer pitch, builds toward another marquee Friday night and concludes with the Eagles competing in Ohio and beyond.

The Gold golf team opens the week at the Stow-Munroe Falls Invitational at 8:30 a.m.

That evening, varsity soccer hosts Andrews Osborne Academy at 6:15 p.m. at Br. James Everett, C.S.C. Stadium.

The Gold golf team returns to tournament competition at the Archbishop Hoban Invitational beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Soccer’s Green team travels to Olmsted Falls for a 5:30 p.m. match.

The Green golf team visits Fairview Park for a 4:30 p.m. dual match.

Junior varsity golf hosts Avon Lake and University School in a three-team match beginning at 2:30 p.m.

The Freshman Gold football team travels to Massillon for a 6 p.m. kickoff.

Varsity football takes center stage at 7 p.m. as the undefeated Eagles face Massillon Washington at Baldwin Wallace University’s George Finnie Stadium.

Cross country begins a busy Saturday at 9 a.m. when the varsity Eagles compete in the Trinity/Valkyrie Invitational at Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Gold golf team also tees off at 9 a.m. in the Bishop Watterson High School Invitational.

Junior varsity football travels to Massillon for a 10 a.m. kickoff, while the Freshman Green team hosts Padua Franciscan at the same time.

All three soccer teams will host Perrysburg at Br. James Everett, C.S.C. Stadium. The Green team begins the tripleheader at noon, followed by the Gold team at 1:30 p.m. and the varsity match at 3 p.m.

Junior varsity golf travels to University School for a noon match.

The Gold team concludes the athletic week at the Aurora Invitational beginning at 2 p.m.

Autumn seasons are not built in a single night. They are constructed through repetition—one practice, one round, one race and one possession at a time.

Last week brought St. Edward a rivalry victory, a determined response on the soccer pitch, outstanding individual rounds and another step forward on the cross-country course.

This week will take the Eagles from Northeast Ohio’s fairways to the trails of Kentucky, from their home soccer stadium to the bright lights at Baldwin Wallace.

Four varsity programs. Seven days. Another collection of opportunities to represent the Green and Gold.

The work continues.
