LAKEWOOD, Ohio, Sept. 11, 2026 - St. Edward stopped Archbishop Hoban for no gain on the final play Friday night, preserving a 17-14 victory between two Holy Cross programs at First Federal Lakewood Stadium. The Eagles led by 10 entering the fourth quarter before withstanding Hoban’s late touchdown drive to improve to 4-0.
St. Edward established control with a five-play, 67-yard drive on its first offensive possession, with Langston Lucas finishing the drive with a quarterback draw for a touchdown., giving the Eagles a 7-0 first-quarter lead. Hoban answered with an 88-yard drive in the second quarter, capped by Major Cribbs’ rushing touchdown, but Dallas Nixon’s 25-yard field goal completed a 13-play, 72-yard possession and sent St. Edward into halftime ahead 10-7.
The Eagles produced their most decisive stretch to begin the second half. St. Edward traveled 90 yards in 12 plays while taking 6 minutes, 45 seconds off the clock. Lucas connected with Ronnie Neal on a 33-yard wheel route for the touchdown extending the advantage to 17-7 with 5:15 remaining in the third quarter. The senior quarterback finished with 116 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries while completing 7 of 14 passes for 93 yards and another score.
Neal complemented Lucas with 96 yards from scrimmage, rushing for 50 yards and adding 46 yards on two receptions. The Eagles accumulated 187 rushing yards and 280 total yards while controlling possession for 28:07. They recorded 19 first downs to Hoban’s eight and converted both red-zone opportunities. Defensively, BP Paulozzi contributed a sack and three tackles for loss as St. Edward held Hoban without points on a fourth-quarter drive that ended with a missed field-goal attempt.
Hoban made its final push after St. Edward used another 5:19 on a nine-play possession. Cameron Chaney caught a touchdown pass with 1:58 remaining to cut the Eagles’ lead to 17-14. St. Edward then drained 1:53 before Landon Walkem punted with five seconds left. Hoban’s final snap gained no yards, ending the threat and securing the Eagles’ fourth victory.
“It’s good to be 4-0 at this point, a hard-fought game for sure against a good football team with good players, so we’re happy we got out with a victory,” a St. Edward representative said afterward. The Eagles next host undefeated Massillon Washington at Baldwin Wallace on Friday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. CDT.
