Nine Patriots Wrestlers Head to Franklin for Individual State Tournament

Sullivan East High School will be well represented in Franklin on Feb. 20 when nine Patriots wrestlers take the mat at the Individual State Wrestling Tournament at the Williamson County Ag Expo Park. With a deep contingent that spans multiple weight classes and includes both boys and girls competitors, the Patriots enter the weekend with a realistic chance to place several wrestlers on the podium and contend for individual state titles.

Leading the charge on the boys side, veterans such as Jimmy Johnston and Bentley Key will anchor the Patriots’ lineup in some of the most competitive brackets of the tournament. Johnston is expected to face a deep field where mat awareness and conditioning in the later periods will be critical, while Key’s physical style and ability to score from neutral position give him potential to make a run. Fellow qualifier Haden Jones adds depth in the middle weights, where the margins between advancement and elimination are typically razor-thin.

Upper weights and technique-heavy divisions will also feature Patriots standouts, with Taylor Zoss projected as a key factor in matches that often come down to riding time and escapes. Zoss’ success in controlling ties and maintaining position could be decisive against opponents who rely on big-move offense. Across the boys brackets, Patriots wrestlers have shown throughout the season that they are comfortable in tight, low-scoring bouts, a trait that typically translates well to the pressure of the state stage.

On the girls side, Sullivan East brings one of its deepest state groups to date, highlighted by contenders such as Kadence Stamey and Jolee Meade. Stamey’s aggressive attacking style from neutral could set the tone early in her matches, while Meade has demonstrated the ability to turn defense into quick scoring opportunities. In addition, qualifiers Makayla Roberts and Brynlee Cosby will look to capitalize on strong mat wrestling and resilience in scramble situations, where one decisive turn can change the trajectory of an entire bracket.

Rounding out the Patriots contingent, Brianna Rutledge gives Sullivan East yet another potential point scorer in a field that rewards consistency and composure over multiple days of competition. With nine total qualifiers—Johnston, Key, Jones, Zoss, Stamey, Meade, Roberts, Cosby and Rutledge—the Patriots have already achieved a milestone by advancing such a large group to Franklin. The focus now shifts to execution, as each wrestler aims to navigate challenging draws, secure podium finishes and potentially bring individual state championships back to Sullivan East.
