LAKELAND, Fla. - Brooklyn Cullen claimed the SSAA Girls State Championship on Thursday, Sept. 17, finishing with a 77 to secure a one-stroke victory over runner-up Kylani Gathers. Gathers posted a 78 as the championship came down to the narrowest margin between the top two finishers.

Cullen’s winning total set the standard in a closely contested race for first place. With little separation on the leaderboard, each stroke carried added importance, and Cullen completed the round one shot clear of Gathers to take the individual championship. Gathers remained within striking distance throughout the final totals and finished alone in second place.

The championship was played in warm and breezy conditions in Lakeland. The temperature was 88 degrees at the scheduled 4:15 p.m. start, with partly cloudy skies and winds at 18 mph. Those conditions placed an additional premium on controlling ball flight and limiting mistakes as Cullen and Gathers produced the event’s two lowest scores.

The final margin underscored how closely the title was decided. Cullen’s 77 was enough to hold the top position, while Gathers’ 78 kept the championship in doubt through the completion of the scoring. No playoff was needed after Cullen emerged with the outright lead.

Cullen finished the day as the SSAA girls state champion, with Gathers earning runner-up honors after ending just one stroke back. Their combined showing provided a tight finish to the state championship, with only a single shot separating first place from second.
