Taft College dropped both ends of a home doubleheader to Fresno City on March 17 at the TC Softball Field, falling 19-2 in five innings in the opener before mounting a stronger effort in a 7-4 loss in Game 2. A five-run Fresno City sixth inning in the nightcap proved to be the decisive stretch after the Cougars had led through five.
In Game 2, Taft College traded early punches with Fresno City and carried a 3-2 lead into the sixth inning behind persistent offensive pressure. The Cougars scored single runs in the second, third and fifth innings and added another in the sixth to total 10 hits against Fresno City starter Emily Hinchey. The Rams, however, broke through with a five-run sixth to flip a one-run deficit into a 7-3 lead and held on for the 7-4 final.
Taft matched Fresno City in the early innings of the nightcap, answering the Rams’ second-inning run with one of its own to make it 1-1. The Cougars moved in front 2-1 with a run in the third and, after Fresno City tied the game in the fifth, Taft answered again. Jashia Lee-Hernando delivered a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to push the Cougars back in front, 3-2, giving Taft its second lead of the game and setting up a tight finish.
Offensively, Taft put together one of its more balanced hitting efforts of the day in Game 2, finishing with 10 hits and four runs while also leaving Fresno City under pressure in multiple innings. The Cougars also received steadier pitching in the nightcap, limiting Fresno City to two runs over the first five frames before the Rams’ decisive rally in the sixth. Fresno City closed the game with a clean seventh to secure the sweep despite Taft’s late push.
Game 1 followed a different script, as Fresno City’s offense surged early and never slowed in a 19-2, five-inning decision. Both teams scored twice in the first inning, with Taft College answering an early Rams outburst to make it 2-2 after one. Fresno City then scored in each of the next four innings, using big frames in the third and fourth to pull away while holding the Cougars scoreless over the final four innings.
Taft finished the opener with two runs on four hits, including a first-inning home run that helped the Cougars keep pace in the early going. Cougar pitchers worked all five innings, allowing 12 hits but battling through extended Fresno City rallies as the Rams capitalized on walks and hit batters to generate traffic. Defensively, Taft committed just two errors in the opener and settled in during the latter innings, but Fresno City’s early separation was too much to overcome.
Across the doubleheader, Taft College showed improvement from Game 1 to Game 2, particularly in its offensive approach and run prevention. The Cougars produced 14 hits and six runs on the day and held a late lead in the nightcap before Fresno City’s sixth-inning surge. Taft now turns its attention to upcoming conference play, looking to build on the competitive effort in Game 2 and the consistent contact at the plate as the schedule continues.
