Cougars Push Merced to 12 Innings Before Falling 7–6 at Cougar Field

Taft College battled back twice and forced extra innings, but a 12th-inning single by Merced proved decisive in a 7–6 Cougars loss in a marathon nonconference matchup Tuesday afternoon at Cougar Field in Taft, Calif.

The Cougars erased an early 2–0 deficit with a three-run surge in the bottom of the third, then staged a dramatic three-run rally in the ninth to extend the game. Trailing 6–3 in their final at-bat, Taft strung together clutch swings, highlighted by a two-run single from Landon Angelo and an RBI double off the bat of Aiden Otano to pull even at 6–6 and send the contest into extras.

Merced finally broke the deadlock in the top of the 12th. After Ren Nakamichi reached and moved into scoring position, Koen Heupel delivered what became the game-winning hit, singling Nakamichi home for a 7–6 edge. The Cougars put the tying run on base in the bottom half but could not push it across as Merced closed out the one-run decision.

Taft’s first big answer came in the third inning. Down 2–0 after an RBI single from Heston Blom in the first and a sacrifice fly from Karson Valenti in the third, the Cougars responded with a three-run frame to take a 3–2 lead, a rally that included an RBI double from Rodart and pressure that forced a defensive miscue. Merced later tied the game 3–3 in the eighth on Nakamichi’s sacrifice fly, setting up a back-and-forth finish.

The Cougars appeared on the brink of defeat in the ninth after Merced built a 6–3 cushion. Andrew Orozco’s RBI single put Merced back in front, and Valenti followed with a two-run home run to left, giving the visitors a three-run lead. Taft answered immediately in the bottom half, loading the bases and cashing in when Angelo laced a two-run single and Otano drove a run-scoring double to the gap to pull the Cougars even and energize the home dugout.

Offensively, Taft matched Merced nearly swing for swing, finishing with 14 hits to Merced’s 16. Otano paced the Cougars’ attack with a 3-for-6 day that included two doubles and an RBI. Taft also doubled three times and added a triple, consistently applying pressure in the middle innings and late in regulation. The Cougars’ defense was clean behind the pitching staff, committing no errors over 12 innings.

Despite the narrow loss, the Cougars showed resilience in extending the game and answering Merced’s late surge, particularly with the three-run ninth that forced extra innings. Taft will look to build on the offensive production and clean defense from Tuesday’s contest as the Cougars move deeper into the schedule continuing to play Merced again this Thursday in Merced and back in Taft Saturday at 1:00pm.
