Lady Cougars Lose to Fresno City Despite Lopez's 12 Saves

FRESNO, Calif. - Taft College fell 12-0 to Fresno City in a conference match Friday after Alecksandra Ortiz scored the deciding goal in the opening minute. Maddie Essegian assisted Ortiz on the early finish, and Fresno City added six more first-half goals to take control. The loss moved the Cougars to 3-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play, while Fresno City improved to 7-1 and 4-0.
Taft goalkeeper Liliana Lopez played all 90 minutes and made 12 saves while facing 24 shots on goal. Lopez worked under pressure throughout the match and prevented additional chances from reaching the net. The Cougars put three shots on goal at the other end, but Fresno City's goalkeeper stopped all three to preserve the shutout.
Fresno City doubled its lead in the 16th minute when Melayna Vasquez scored from Abby Cano Ledezma's assist. Ariana Avalos made it 3-0 in the 30th minute before Morgan Ashanti Jones struck twice, scoring in the 35th and 38th minutes. Vasquez added her second goal in the 41st minute, and Miranda Ocegueda scored from Lea Stewart's assist in the 45th to send Fresno City into halftime ahead 7-0.
The hosts continued their attack after halftime. Parker Woods scored in the 49th minute, followed by Ella Lamonica in the 57th and Daniela Lua in the 71st. Ortiz recorded her second goal in the 76th minute with an assist from Avalos, and Noann Morice completed the scoring in the 86th off Evie Juarez's assist. Ocegueda finished with one goal and two assists, while Ortiz, Vasquez and Jones each scored twice.
The Cougars will remain on the road for their next conference match, visiting Reedley on Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 6 p.m. Taft will look to regroup behind Lopez's work in goal and generate more opportunities after being held scoreless in Fresno.
