Late Equalizer Leaves Taft College With 1-1 Draw Against Los Angeles City

TAFT, Calif. - Taft College held the lead for more than 70 minutes before Erick Grimaldo scored an 83rd-minute equalizer, leaving the Cougars with a 1-1 draw against Los Angeles City on Friday at Taft College. Neither side found a winner over the closing minutes, and Taft remained unbeaten at 2-0-5.
Diego Delacruz put the Cougars in front in the 12th minute. Jonathan Herrera supplied the assist on the opening goal, giving Delacruz his first scoring contribution of the match and Taft an early advantage. The Cougars protected that 1-0 margin through the remainder of the first half.
Taft continued to keep Los Angeles City off the scoreboard deep into the second half. The Cougars' goalkeeper made four saves while facing five shots on goal, helping the team maintain its narrow lead until Grimaldo broke through with seven minutes remaining in regulation.
The Cougars pressed for a response after the tying goal but could not beat Los Angeles City goalkeeper Emilio Garcia again. Garcia played all 90 minutes, made four saves and allowed only Delacruz's early goal. Each team finished with five shots on target, four goalkeeper saves and one goal.
The draw was Taft's fifth through seven matches and extended the Cougars' unbeaten start to the season. Los Angeles City moved to 3-2-2. Taft will return home to face Madera on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 3 p.m.
