Josue Chavez scored in the 43rd minute, and Taft College protected the lead through the second half to defeat LA Mission 1-0 on Tuesday, Sept. 8, in Taft, California. The late first-half finish proved decisive as the Cougars earned a shutout victory on their home field.
The breakthrough came just before halftime when Diego Delacruz set up Josue Chavez for the match’s only goal. Josue Chavez converted the opportunity to put the Cougars ahead 1-0, recording both his first goal and first game-winning goal. The assist was Diego Delacruz’s first contribution to the scoring, sending Taft into the break with the advantage.
Taft’s defense made the one-goal margin stand throughout the final 45 minutes. Goalkeepers Aslan Chong and Noah Rosales split the match evenly, with each playing 45 scoreless minutes to complete the combined shutout. Neither goalkeeper was credited with a save, reflecting a defensive effort that kept LA Mission from finding an equalizer.
The match remained tight and physical, but neither side received a red card. The Cougars were shown one yellow card, while LA Mission collected two. Neither team recorded a corner kick or an offside, and the game’s only scoring production came from the first-half connection between Diego Delacruz and Josue Chavez.
The victory gave Taft a clean sheet and another positive result built on timely finishing and disciplined defending. The Cougars next travel to face San Bernardino Valley on Friday, Sept. 11, 2026, at 4 p.m. PDT.
