A ninth-inning pinch-hit single spoiled a gritty comeback effort by Taft College on Wednesday, as the Cougars fell 7-6 to Compton at the MLB Youth Academy in Compton, Calif.
Taft erased an early 5-4 deficit and twice battled back to even the game, pulling level at 5-5 after the seventh and again at 6-6 in the eighth. Compton finally broke the deadlock in the bottom of the ninth, when pinch-hitter Nathan Baca delivered a walk-off RBI single to score Corey Guy and hand the Cougars the one-run setback in front of a crowd of about 200.
The Cougars set the tone early by jumping out to a 4-0 lead through two innings. In the top of the first, Gaku Yamamoto lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Zaden Kekoa D. Sibal with the game’s first run. Taft then put together a three-run second, capitalizing on pressure and defensive miscues. Sibal reached on an error by the right fielder that allowed two runs to score, stretching the margin to 4-0 and capping a strong start for the Taft offense.
Compton slowly chipped away, scoring single runs in the second and third before posting a pivotal three-run fourth inning to move in front. A run-scoring double from Jaidon Carter and another RBI double from Matthew Marroquin highlighted the frame, flipping the score to 5-4 in favor of the hosts. Taft’s pitching and defense settled in from there, keeping Compton off the board in the fifth and sixth to give the Cougar offense a chance to respond.
Taft finally broke through again late. After tying the game following the seventh to make it 5-5, the Cougars continued to apply pressure on the bases. In the top of the eighth, Carson Rodart came through with a clutch RBI single, driving in Edel Guemarez to tie the contest at 6-6 and swing momentum back toward Taft. The Cougars finished with 11 hits, drew three walks and were aggressive on the basepaths, swiping six bags on the night.
Sibal and Guemarez keyed the Taft attack at the top of the order. Sibal scored twice, collected two hits and drove in two runs while adding a stolen base. Guemarez matched him with two hits, two runs scored and a walk, and led the running game with two stolen bases. Despite being held to two strikeouts as a lineup, the Cougars stranded seven runners, narrowly missing additional scoring chances in a back-and-forth matchup.
Compton finished with 16 hits and five stolen bases but committed four errors, while Taft was charged with just one miscue. The Cougars’ ability to build an early cushion and rally late highlighted a resilient road performance, even as Baca’s ninth-inning single provided the final blow. Taft will look to build on the offensive production and late-inning fight as the Cougars continue their schedule against regional opponents.
