Melgoza’s Overtime Goal Lifts Taft Women Past Lemoore, 1-0

Shelby Melgoza broke a scoreless tie with an unassisted goal in the 93rd minute, lifting Taft College to a 1-0 overtime victory over host Lemoore College on Friday in Lemoore. The decisive strike gave the Cougars a hard-earned win after neither side scored during 90 minutes of regulation.
Taft generated chances throughout the match but could not break through against Lemoore goalkeeper Sara Cordova during regulation. Cordova finished with six saves, keeping the Cougars off the scoreboard through both 45-minute halves. Taft remained persistent and finally converted three minutes into the first overtime when Melgoza produced the game-winning goal without an assist.
The match changed significantly in the 50th minute when Taft’s Zillah Gaylord and Ashanti Jones and Lemoore’s Haylee Vega and Bianca Cordero received red cards. Jones also received a yellow card. Despite playing the remainder of the contest with a reduced lineup, the Cougars maintained their defensive shape and continued pressing for the opening goal.
Liliana Lopez completed the shutout in goal for Taft, playing all 95 minutes without allowing a goal. Lemoore did not record a save against Lopez, but the Cougars’ goalkeeper and defense protected the clean sheet through regulation and overtime. Taft’s defensive performance gave Melgoza the opportunity to settle the match with her first goal and game-winning goal of the contest.
The Cougars return home to face Merced on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2026, at 12:30 p.m. Taft will carry forward a shutout victory built on defensive discipline, sustained attacking pressure and Melgoza’s timely overtime finish.
