TAFT, Calif. - Bryan Ortiz scored the eventual winning goal in the 10th minute as Taft College defeated Madera College 3-0 on Friday, Oct. 16, in Madera. Jacob Cooke-Ruiz supplied the assist on the opening goal.
The Cougars added to their advantage in the 30th minute when Josue Chavez scored off an assist from Ian Menjivar. That combination put Taft ahead 2-0, giving the visitors a two-goal cushion to carry into halftime after keeping Madera scoreless through the opening 45 minutes.
Menjivar moved from provider to scorer in the second half, finishing in the 62nd minute to extend the lead to 3-0. Cooke-Ruiz delivered his second assist of the match on the play. Taft finished with three different goal scorers and an assist credited on every goal.
Goalkeeper Aslan Chong played all 90 minutes to earn the shutout and the win. He did not record a save. After Menjivar's goal completed the scoring, Chong and the Cougars' defense kept Madera off the scoreboard for the remaining 28 minutes to preserve the three-goal margin.
Jonathan Herrera received Taft's only yellow card, while Madera was assessed two yellow cards. The Cougars play Fresno City next on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 3 p.m. at home.
