A furious second-half comeback by Taft College came up just short Wednesday night, as the Cougars fell 76-68 to Fresno in a conference matchup in Taft despite dominating the glass and generating extra possessions throughout the game.

Fresno used a decisive fourth-quarter push to secure the outcome after Taft had trimmed what was once a 16-point deficit to a single possession. Trailing 55-52 entering the fourth quarter, the Cougars stayed within striking distance but could not overcome Fresno’s efficient shooting. Fresno outscored Taft 21-16 over the final 10 minutes to close out the win and hand the Cougars a hard-fought home loss.

Taft’s comeback bid was built on a dominant effort on the boards and persistent defensive pressure. The Cougars outrebounded Fresno 51-32, including a staggering 24 offensive rebounds that repeatedly extended possessions. Taft also forced 17 turnovers and came up with 14 steals, turning defense into offense to change the game’s momentum out of halftime after trailing 45-29 at the break.

Sophomore forward Madyn Kassatly powered the Cougars with a double-double, finishing with 20 points and 12 rebounds, seven of them on the offensive glass. Kassatly added five assists and a game-high seven steals in 38 minutes, setting the tone for Taft’s pressure defense and third-quarter surge. Laila Gines provided a strong inside-out presence with 17 points, eight rebounds and two blocks, while guard Ella Waufle knocked down three 3-pointers on her way to 14 points, three assists and three steals in 36 minutes.

Those efforts fueled a dominant third quarter for Taft. After being outscored 26-11 in the second quarter, the Cougars responded with a 23-10 advantage in the third, tightening up defensively and attacking the rim to draw contact and create scoring chances. Taft’s energy on the glass and in the passing lanes helped slice Fresno’s lead from 16 to three, giving the Cougars a clear path back into the game heading into the final quarter.

Ultimately, Fresno’s shooting proved to be the difference. While Taft converted 25 of 79 attempts from the field (31.6 percent) and 8 of 28 from beyond the arc (28.6 percent), Fresno was more efficient, hitting 26 of 55 shots (47.3 percent) and 8 of 23 from 3-point range (34.8 percent). The visitors also made timely trips to the free-throw line, finishing 16 of 23 at the stripe, compared with Taft’s 10 of 14. Fresno’s interior defense also impacted the game, as the visitors recorded nine blocks, challenging Cougar attempts around the basket.

Despite the loss, the performance highlighted Taft’s resilience and ability to adjust in-game, particularly in the third quarter. With Kassatly, Gines and Waufle leading a balanced effort and the Cougars controlling the boards, Taft showed it can compete with one of the conference’s more efficient offensive teams. The Cougars will look to build on the defensive intensity and rebounding edge from this contest as they move deeper into conference play.

Next up for Taft is Porterville College on the road Saturday, February 7 at 5:00 pm. Taft will also return to home action when they host their 3rd Annual National Play 4Kay Kay Yow Breast Cancer Awareness Game on Wednesday, February 11 at 6:00 pm.
