Taft College opens NorCal Regional series at San Joaquin Delta with power, speed and survival on the line

Taft College begins the postseason Friday with a difficult first-round draw, traveling to face No. 3 seed San Joaquin Delta College in Game 1 of a best-of-three 3C2A Softball NorCal Regional playoff series in Stockton. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at San Joaquin Delta, with Game 2 scheduled for noon Saturday and a deciding Game 3, if necessary, at 2 p.m. The stakes are straightforward: the winner advances to the second round, and the Cougars will try to turn a No. 14 seed into a longer postseason stay against the Big 8 Conference champions.
The matchup pairs two teams that arrived there by different paths. San Joaquin Delta enters as the No. 3 seed and the Big 8 champion, while Taft comes in as the No. 14 seed after finishing third in the Central Valley Conference. For the Cougars, the path to an upset starts with an offense that has produced impact numbers throughout conference play. Catcher #17 leads the Central Valley Conference with a .507 batting average, ranks second with 45 RBIs and is tied for fourth with eight home runs, giving Taft a middle-of-the-order bat capable of changing a game with one swing.
Taft also brings pressure in multiple forms. Mid-infielder Katelynn Moore, wearing No. 6, leads the conference with 44 stolen bases and gives the Cougars a weapon on the bases if she reaches. Right fielder Jazzy Juarez, No. 14, leads the conference with 11 home runs, adding another major power threat. First baseman Jasmine Estrada, No. 21, has been one of the team’s steadiest run producers, ranking fourth in batting average at .459 while driving in 43 runs. Mid-infielder Cadence Mizener, No. 10, is fifth in the conference with a .438 batting average, giving Taft another reliable contact hitter near the top or middle of the lineup.
The Cougars’ pitching outlook centers on Mischa Mott, No. 24, who also contributes significantly at the plate with 42 RBIs, fifth-most in the conference. That two-way value could become especially important in a postseason series where runs are often scarce and momentum can shift quickly from game to game. Against a higher-seeded Delta club, Taft’s clearest formula is to combine traffic on the bases, pressure with speed and timely extra-base power, while getting the kind of pitching performance that keeps each game within reach late.
For Taft, Friday’s opener is more than a single playoff game. It is the first step in a series that will test whether the Cougars’ blend of top-end hitters, baserunning aggression and lineup depth can carry over against one of Northern California’s top seeds. With advancement on the line and little margin for error, the opening game in Stockton should set the tone for the entire weekend.
