LOMPOC, Calif. — Taft College men’s golf opened its spring schedule by tackling one of the region’s toughest tests, competing in the two-day Pt. Conception Invitational on Jan. 25-26 at La Purisima Golf Course. In a deep field of approximately 16 Southern California community college programs, the Cougars finished toward the back of the pack but gained valuable experience against some of the state’s top teams, including host programs such as College of the Desert and College of the Canyons.

Taft posted a team score of 392 in the opening round, a number that left the Cougars chasing the leaders on Day 1. With several of the perennial powers in the field posting lower team totals, Taft’s score reflected the difficulty of La Purisima’s layout and the early-season timing of the event. The tournament served as an early barometer of where the Cougars stand as they move into the heart of the spring schedule.

Individually, freshman Brady Shipley led the way for Taft College over the 36-hole event. Shipley carded an 81 in the first round before following with an 83 in the second round, finishing with a two-day total of 164. On a demanding course known for tight driving corridors, thick rough and penal green complexes, his performance stood out as a steady effort in challenging conditions.

Shipley’s opening-round 81 helped anchor the Cougars’ first-day total, giving Taft a reliable number near the top of its lineup. While specific hole-by-hole scoring was not available, his back-to-back rounds in the low 80s suggested he managed La Purisima’s more punishing holes while limiting big numbers. His 83 on Day 2 kept him as Taft’s top finisher and provided the Cougars with a consistent presence amid a field that featured several low individual rounds from the region’s elite programs.

As a team, Taft struggled at times to match the depth of the leading schools, with higher individual scores pushing the Cougars’ totals up relative to the front-runners. Still, the group competed with commitment across both days, using the event as an opportunity to face high-level opposition early in the season. The combination of a demanding course and a strong field offered a realistic picture of the standard required to contend in major Southern California community college tournaments.

With the Pt. Conception Invitational now in the books, Taft College will look to build on the experience gained at La Purisima as it returns to conference play and additional spring events. Shipley’s performance provides a foundation at the top of the lineup, and the Cougars will aim to tighten team scoring and lower their overall totals as they move deeper into the schedule.
