Taft College Splits Sacramento Doubleheader, Sweeps Shasta After Five-Set Loss

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Taft College split a volleyball doubleheader Sept. 2 at Clark Court, falling to Cosumnes River College 3-2 before responding with a 3-0 sweep of Shasta. The Cougars moved to 3-1 overall after playing eight sets across the two matches.

Cosumnes River won the opener 25-18, 20-25, 18-25, 25-22, 15-12. Taft struggled offensively in the first set, finishing with five kills and a minus-.143 hitting percentage, but quickly found its rhythm. The Cougars produced 15 kills and two blocks in the second set, then hit .316 with 16 kills in the third to build a 2-1 match advantage.

Cosumnes River answered with 12 kills and four aces in the fourth set to force a fifth. Taft continued to attack effectively in the decider, recording nine kills with a .261 hitting percentage, but Cosumnes River secured the final three-point margin. The Cougars finished with advantages of 58-45 in kills, 87-69 in digs and .200-.165 in hitting percentage. Cosumnes River countered with 14 aces and six blocks, compared with Taft's 13 aces and three blocks.

Satele, Jazzahlei led the Cougars in the opener with 24 kills, 18 digs and a .309 hitting percentage. Perier, Vienna contributed 10 kills, 17 assists, 26 digs and two aces, while Manaois, Ku'uleimokihana had six kills and a team-high five aces. Makainai-Kon, Railye-Marie distributed 19 assists, and Tafisi, Teihanni added 16 digs, seven assists and two aces. Snow, Paityn paced Cosumnes River with 17 kills, while Stutes, Lauren recorded 12 kills, five aces and five blocks.

Taft rebounded against Shasta College with set victories of 25-17, 25-16 and 25-21. The Cougars registered 13 kills in each of the first two sets and added two aces and a block in the opener. Taft followed with two blocks in the second set while holding Shasta to a minus-.054 hitting percentage, then closed the sweep with a match-high 16 kills in the third.

The Cougars controlled the overall statistical matchup against Shasta, leading 42-26 in kills, .176-.035 in hitting percentage, 62-50 in digs, 6-4 in aces and 3-1 in blocks. Satele, Jazzahlei completed the doubleheader with 13 kills and 15 digs in the sweep, and Satele, Jadalynn added 10 kills and 15 digs. Perier, Vienna supplied 16 assists and 14 digs, Makainai-Kon, Railye-Marie had 17 assists, and Tafisi, Teihanni served three aces. Manaois, Ku'uleimokihana added seven kills while hitting .294 as Taft finished the day with a straight-set response.

Taft will be on the road again for a doubleheader when they face Folsom Lake College and Hartnell College on Friday, September 4.
