Taft College Trio Powers Historic Season On The Court And In The Classroom

Romeo Lagmay | Taft College | Mar 11, 2026

What makes this Taft College women’s basketball group special isn’t just the wins on the schedule, but the three sophomores at the heart of it: Madyn Kassatly, Ella Waufle and Alesha Gordon. Together, they powered a historic winning season for the Cougars, earning postseason honors, academic recognition and the respect of everyone around the program. They return to the court each day as leaders who know the system, embrace the culture and set the standard for what it means to wear a Taft jersey.

On the floor, Kassatly has emerged as one of the premier players in the conference. The lone Cougar voted First Team All-Conference this year—and for the second straight season—she has been the engine of the Taft attack. In conference play, she averaged 16.5 points and 7.5 rebounds, while swiping 35 steals and finishing as a top-five stat leader in five different categories. That kind of all-around dominance has made her the go-to option in big moments and the player teammates look to when the Cougars need a spark.

Waufle has been the perfect backcourt complement, bringing balance, toughness and consistency. A First Team All-Conference selection last year and a Second Team pick this season, she continued to be a reliable scoring threat, averaging 12 points per game and shooting 36 percent from the field in conference play, while collecting 25 steals. Her versatility allows Taft to adjust on the fly—whether she’s spacing the floor, creating off the dribble or locking in defensively, Waufle gives the Cougars exactly what they need on any given night.

Taft College Head Women's Basketball Coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. shared his thoughts, "These players have grown since day one. They understood the mission during training, playing and working hard to accomplish those goals in basketball and in their academic arena. I am very thankful for their commitment in establishing TC basketball in one of the premier programs in the state.

Inside, Gordon has anchored the paint with physicality and persistence. As an Honorable Mention post player, she averaged 6 points and 8 rebounds per game in conference action, hitting 41 percent of her shots. Her willingness to battle on the glass, finish through contact and do the “dirty work” has been vital to Taft’s success. While others might grab the headlines, teammates and coaches know Gordon’s presence in the lane changes games, giving the Cougars second-chance opportunities and a steady defensive backbone.

What ties this trio together goes beyond the box score. All three are returners who came back with a clear understanding of Taft’s style of play and a deep commitment to the program. They’ve been respectful, coachable leaders who assisted in setting the tone in the locker room and on campus. Waufle and Gordon have also distinguished themselves in the classroom as two-time Academic All-State honorees in the CCCWBCA, showing younger Cougars that excellence at Taft means performing at a high level in both academics and athletics.

Now, their journey is entering an exciting new chapter. All three are in the process of signing and moving on to four-year programs, a testament to their work ethic and the foundation they helped build at Taft. Kassatly and Waufle will showcase their talents one more time locally at the 2026 annual sophomore showcase at Fresno City College on Friday, March 13, representing the Cougars on a big stage. Wherever they land next, their legacy at Taft College is already secure—as standout players, dedicated students and leaders who raised the bar for Cougar women’s basketball.
