Taft College Women's Soccer Coach Lyle Martin, Jr. Joins Stockdale Hall of Fame Class of 2025
Taft College women’s soccer coach Lyle Martin, Jr. earned a place among Stockdale High School’s greats as part of the school’s six-member Hall of Fame Class of 2025. The class was honored March 29, 2025, at Stockdale Country Club in Bakersfield, California, celebrating achievements that have carried Stockdale pride into college athletics, professional soccer and youth development.
The Hall of Fame recognition highlighted Lyle’s accomplishments as a player, coach and youth mentor. At Stockdale High, Lyle helped win three Southwest Yosemite League championships and a Valley Championship, establishing a record of success that continued at California State University, Bakersfield.
At CSUB, Lyle helped the program capture the 2004-05 California Collegiate Athletic Association championship. Lyle later claimed the conference goal-scoring title after recording 17 goals in 19 matches, an impressive scoring run that helped open the door to a professional career.
That career included winning a 2008 United Soccer League championship with the Vancouver Whitecaps (USL First Division). In 2010, Lyle added another landmark accomplishment by becoming the first American to play for a Chinese professional soccer club with Shaanxi Chan-Ba. He also played for Wuhan Zall and Beijing Baxy, extending a Bakersfield soccer journey onto the international stage. Domestically, Lyle had career stints with the San Antonio Scorpions and Chivas USA.
The impact continued away from professional competition. Lyle founded Mighty Kicks, a youth program that served more than 5,000 children across Kern County, and coached Stockdale High to four league titles. Now leading the Taft College women’s soccer program as head coach, Lyle continues to build on a legacy rooted in championship performance, mentorship and service to young athletes.
