Taft College used a dominant middle stretch and relentless defensive pressure to defeat Porterville 71–33 on Saturday evening at Porterville Gym. The Cougars broke the game open with a 22–12 second quarter and a 23–8 third quarter, turning a modest early edge into a decisive road victory that they controlled from start to finish.
The decisive surge came on both ends of the floor in the second and third quarters, when Taft repeatedly turned turnovers into transition points. After leading 13–8 at the end of the first quarter, the Cougars outscored Porterville 35–20 over the next 10 minutes of game time, seizing a 35–20 advantage at halftime and then stretching the margin to 58–28 by the end of the third. Taft’s pressure defense produced 20 steals and forced 38 Porterville turnovers, setting the tone for the game’s lopsided final margin.
Guard Ella Waufle led a balanced Taft attack with 14 points in just 14 minutes, adding three steals and two assists while connecting on three 3-pointers. Waufle’s impact was felt early and late, beginning with a first-quarter sequence in which she converted a fast-break layup after a steal to push Taft ahead 9–6, then knocked down free throws to extend the lead to 12–6. In the fourth quarter, her 3-pointer at the 7:50 mark made it 61–28 and underscored the Cougars’ control of the contest.
Madyn Kassatly provided additional scoring punch with 13 points, four rebounds and three assists, helping to drive Taft’s third-quarter separation. Kassatly’s 3-pointer with 7:06 remaining in the third made the score 44–20 as the Cougars began to pull away for good. Fellow guard Tiara Jackson added 9 points and 4 rebounds while registering a team-high 4 steals, capitalizing on Porterville miscues with a series of layups and a key 3-pointer that pushed the lead to 25–17 in the second quarter.
Taft’s depth also contributed throughout the lineup as the advantage grew. In the closing stages of the third and into the fourth quarter, the Cougars continued to execute offensively despite the comfortable margin. Nasia Thompson added to a late third-quarter flurry at the free-throw line as Taft closed the frame with 58 points on the board, while Laila Gines punctuated the first half with a layup in the final seconds for a 35–20 halftime lead and finished with multiple key baskets, including an early second-quarter 3-pointer for a 16–10 edge. In the fourth, Faith Wilson’s midrange jumper pushed the lead to 67–28, and Aubrey Aldan’s layup in the final minute set the eventual 71–33 final score.
As a team, Taft finished 26-for-75 from the field (34.7 percent) and 6-for-22 from 3-point range (27.3 percent), while converting 13 free throws and owning a 47–35 advantage on the boards, including 20 offensive rebounds. The Cougars’ activity on the glass created multiple second-chance opportunities and extended possessions that wore down Porterville over the course of the game. Taft also tallied 15 assists, reflecting consistent ball movement and balanced shot distribution.
Porterville was led by Jennifer Gonzalez, who scored a game-high-tying 15 points on 4-for-6 shooting, including the hosts’ lone 3-pointer, and added 4 rebounds while logging 38 minutes. However, the Pirates were limited to 9-for-37 shooting from the floor (24.3 percent) and 1-for-10 from beyond the arc, and their 38 turnovers prevented any sustained offensive rhythm. Taft led at the end of every quarter and maintained focus through the final horn, delivering a comprehensive performance that highlighted the Cougars’ defensive identity and depth as the season progresses.
