TAFT, Calif. - Taft College defeated Fresno City College but finished behind Reedley College in Conference Tournament No. 5 on Monday, Oct. 5, in Taft at the Buena Vista Course. Kaylynn Killion led the Cougars with an 86, while Lydia Halbrook recorded her best round of the season with a 90, matching teammate Keaneh Tauaese.
Killion’s round was four strokes lower than Taft’s next-best scores and made Killion the only Cougar to finish below 90. The 86 set the pace for a lineup that had three golfers finish at 90 or better, with Tauaese and Halbrook sharing the team’s second-lowest score.
Halbrook’s season-best performance was a highlight of the tournament for Taft. Alongside Tauaese’s matching round, it gave the Cougars a pair of 90s behind Killion. Jenna Rios followed with a 96, six strokes behind that pair and 10 behind the team leader.
Alina Moran finished with a 128 to complete Taft’s five individual results. The Cougars’ four lowest rounds added up to 362 strokes. Those scores came on a clear day with a temperature of 94 degrees at the scheduled noon start and winds of 7 mph.
Taft’s team result put the Cougars ahead of Fresno City but short of Reedley, despite Killion’s team-low round and Halbrook’s season best. The Cougars will look to bounce back in their next contest on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at Conference Tournament No. 6 at the Belmont Country Club in Fresno, CA.
