TAFT, Calif. - Taft College lost 2-1 to Fresno City in a league soccer match Friday, September 25, in Fresno, as the hosts scored twice before halftime to overturn the Cougars' opening goal. Fresno City's second first-half goal proved decisive, with neither team scoring after the break.
Josue Chavez put Taft ahead 1-0 with a first-half goal assisted by Jacob Cooke-Ruiz. The two starters combined for the Cougars' lone scoring play, giving Taft the initial advantage on the road. Chavez finished with one goal, while Cooke-Ruiz supplied the team's only assist.
Fresno City answered with an equalizer, then added another goal to take a 2-1 lead into halftime. Those two goals turned the match around before the interval and left the Cougars needing a second-half response. All three goals in the match came during the opening half.
Aslan Chong played the full 90 minutes in goal for Taft and allowed two goals. Chong and the Cougars' defense held Fresno City scoreless throughout the second half, keeping the deficit at one goal through the final whistle. Neither team received a yellow or red card.
Taft was unable to add to Chavez's opener after halftime, and Fresno City maintained its one-goal advantage to finish the match. The scoreless second half left the halftime score unchanged. The Cougars will look to bounce back in their next contest on Tuesday, September 29, against College of the Sequoias.
