TC Volleyball Sweeps Cabrillo, Pushes San Mateo to Five Sets in Doubleheader Split

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Taft College split a volleyball doubleheader Wednesday at College of San Mateo, sweeping Cabrillo 3-0 before falling to San Mateo 3-2 in a five-set match. The Cougars beat Cabrillo 25-10, 25-9, 25-18, then took the first and fourth sets against San Mateo before dropping the 15-12 finale.
Taft controlled the opening match with efficient attacking, steady defense and a strong presence at the net. The Cougars hit .247 with 33 kills and only 10 attack errors while totaling six service aces, 53 digs and eight blocks. After taking the first set 25-10, Taft was at its best in the second, hitting .382 with 15 kills and two errors in a 25-9 victory. A 25-18 result in the third completed the sweep.
Jazzahlei Satele led the balanced effort against Cabrillo with 12 kills on .385 hitting, three aces and 15 digs. Jadalynn Satele added six kills, 16 digs and two blocks. Shylah Pulu-Havi Valdez finished with four kills without an attack error and contributed five blocks, including two solo stops. Vienna Perier supplied four kills, 15 assists, eight digs and three blocks, while Railye-Marie Makainai-Kon added eight assists and an ace.
The second match brought a tougher challenge, but Taft opened with 10 kills in a 25-22 first-set win over host San Mateo. San Mateo answered 25-16 in the second, then claimed a back-and-forth third set 27-25 to move within one set of the match. The Cougars responded rather than letting the narrow loss decide the contest, winning the fourth 25-20 to force a fifth set. San Mateo secured the deciding set 15-12.
Jazzahlei Satele again paced Taft's attack, finishing with 18 kills, one ace and six digs. Perier delivered an all-around performance with nine kills on .308 hitting, 17 assists and a team-high 23 digs. Jadalynn Satele recorded 10 kills, 13 digs, an ace and four blocks, including three solo blocks. Teihanni Tafisi contributed 18 digs, and Pulu-Havi Valdez had four kills and four blocks as the Cougars finished with 71 digs and 8.5 total blocks.
San Mateo hit .298 and received 20 kills from Synia Hunt, while Kendall Lee added 12 kills on .417 hitting. Taft finished the doubleheader with a sweep and a five-set test, led by Jazzahlei Satele's combined 30 kills. The Cougars will be on the road at Delta College to face De Anza at 2:30 p.m. and Delta at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
