TAFT, Calif. - Taft College kept Merced College off the scoreboard for nearly 40 minutes before Monica Moreno broke through, opening a late first-half surge that sent the visitors to a 6-0 conference victory Tuesday. Moreno scored the decisive goal in the 40th minute and finished with five goals.
The Cougars held firm through the first 39 minutes, keeping the match level despite Merced's pressure. Moreno changed the game with the opening goal, then struck again at the 45-minute mark to double the advantage and give Merced a 2-0 halftime lead.
Merced carried that momentum into the second half. Moreno completed her hat trick in the 55th minute after taking a pass from Josie Godinez, then added an unassisted goal in the 63rd. She scored for the fifth time in the 70th minute, converting an assist from Bella Rodriguez to extend the margin to 5-0.
Rodriguez closed the scoring in the 85th minute, adding a goal to her earlier assist. Moreno accounted for seven of Merced's 12 shots on goal and finished with 10 total shots. Godinez added an assist and put two of her three shots on target, while Rodriguez recorded two shots on goal.
Mackenzie Anderson played the first 65 minutes in goal for Merced and made two saves. Gabriela Cienfuegos completed the shutout over the final 25 minutes with one save. Taft will look to respond at home against Madera College at 12:30 p.m, Friday, Sept. 18.
